Law enforcement officials in Vietnam have apprehended three individuals suspected of participating in an illicit sports wagering operation valued at 9 billion Vietnamese dong (37 million euros/39.5 million dollars).
As reported by Vietnam Express, authorities stated that Tran The Hung, Le Hong Chung, and Ngo Minh An were running the nation’s largest unlawful betting ring in the Nghe An province.
The trio were accused of accepting wagers on soccer matches commencing in 2014, prior to the country’s legalization of specific forms of sports betting earlier this year.
The group is thought to have handled over 39,000 illicit sports bets in a three-year span, with the maximum wager reaching 7 million Vietnamese dong, significantly surpassing the government-established betting limit when it authorized wagering on international soccer matches.
“These unlawful bets were placed on international matches or football leagues in England, France, and Germany,” remarked Colonel Nguyen Xuan Them, head of the Nghe An Provincial Financial Crime Department.
