A tennis representative from Bulgaria, Pavel Atanasov, received a lifetime expulsion from the sport due to corruption. He was deemed culpable of 21 infractions of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP), encompassing the manipulation of match results for wagering, enabling betting for other parties, and neglecting to disclose unethical propositions.
Although Atanasov initially disputed the allegations, he subsequently rescinded his challenge and consented to a permanent prohibition from tennis. He is further barred from officiating or being present at any tennis tournaments sanctioned by the sport’s regulatory bodies. Apart from the ban, implemented on March 4, 2024, Atanasov was also assessed a $10,000 penalty.
This situation underscores the continual struggle against dishonesty in tennis and the dedication of the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) to preserving the sport’s principles. It acts as a cautionary tale that even at domestic tiers, individuals engaging in unethical conduct will face repercussions.
In an unrelated matter, the ITIA also imposed sanctions on Luis Hona, issuing a six-month provisional suspension and a $10,000 fine for breaching regulations pertaining to wagering sponsorships.
Tennis player Bernard Tomic faces penalties for violating the sport’s integrity regulations. He endorsed a wagering platform, an action strictly forbidden for athletes. The governing body for ethical conduct in tennis, the Tennis Integrity Unit, explicitly prohibits participants from engaging in any gambling-related activities. Tomic’s behavior was determined to be non-compliant with this established guideline.
